Welfare to Work
The Welfare to Work policy is central to the British Government's reforms of its welfare state and social security system. The core task of Welfare to Work programmes is to enable and encourage unemployed claimants to transfer to work or to better prepare them for employment.
As part of its welfare reform plans, the Government’s Pathways to Work scheme is being been rolled out across the whole country, giving Incapacity Benefit claimants access to a local Pathways service. The scheme works by offering people on long-term benefits access to advisers to help them explore the opportunities available, as well as addressing any health issues. After the eighth week of a claim, benefit claimants attend six compulsory work-focused interviews and get access to in-work support, including job coaches, occupational health, financial and debt counselling, and disability Access to Work teams.
