Young people at the top of the agenda

Reed in Partnership was delighted to sponsor an event hosted by Kids Company. The event took place around a debate entitled “Kids, Adults…Politicians, People: Where Next for Community?”. Speakers included Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder and Chief Executive of Kids Company, Lord David Freud, and Mary Ridley from The Telegraph newspaper.

The debate centred on the importance of providing a structured set of support activities to young people to enable them to move forward in their lives. If there is little or inconsistent support from their family background, disadvantaged youngsters can find it difficult to reach their educational potential, which limits their opportunities in the future.

As a solution, Kids Company workers can provide practical help for young people such as organising visits to a dentist or providing new clothes, to more targeted interventions through therapy. These interventions create a platform on which young people are able to build happy and successful lives.

Kids Company was founded in 1996 to provide support to young ex-offenders and disadvantaged children. The organisation has since grown to be able to reach 14,000 young people in difficult circumstances across London.

To find out more about Kids Company, please view their website www.kidsco.org.uk.

This event followed the launch of Reed in Partnership's part in Backing Young Britain - a new government initiative aimed at supporting young jobseekers and further cements Reed in Partnership's commitment to help young people succeed.

Keep Glasgow Working campaign backed by Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy.

Jim Murphy, Secretary of State for Scotland has visited Reed in Partnership's Glasgow city centre office and given his backing to the Keep Glasgow Working campaign. During his visit, Mr Murphy met with Tom Millar, Operations Director for Scotland and the North, and took a tour of the premises, meeting with Personal Advisers and local employers.

In relation to the Keep Glasgow Working campaign, which was launched by Reed in Partnership and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Mr Murphy commented that despite the downturn, there were still “great things” being done to boost the city’s economy.

He said: “There are a great number of Glaswegians really keen to work and Reed in Partnership, the City Council and Keep Glasgow Working are doing great things to get people into work.

"One of the things that has really stuck with me is just how many people are doing so much to try to get Scots back into work. I can’t over-emphasise the importance of us all pulling together to help the country get through the recession."

Mr Murphy also met Reed in Partnership customer Teresa Cassidy, from Balornock, whose life has already been transformed by Reed.

Teresa, 33, had been out of work for a decade following the birth of her son, but after paying a visit to Reed in Partnership she got all the help she needed to get back into work. She has now been working at Deichmann’s shoe shop in Sauchiehall Street for the past 18 months and is loving it.

She said: “It gives you back your confidence and your self-respect. And of course, having money coming in is great too.”

Reed in Partnership finds success in Eden

Rob Garner, 22, recently became one of the many young people Reed in Partnership is helping to gain work experience or internships through the new Backing Young Britain programme.

Rob gained a 13 week placement with the Eden Project, one of Cornwall's best loved tourist attractions, where he is developing skills in site maintenance and vegetable growing. Rob said "I am really enjoying it and am gaining some valuable experience"

After being referred to Reed in Partnership by Jobcentre Plus, Rob was presented with a number of opportunities to gain employment experience. Assisted by his Reed in Partnership adviser, Rob applied for the role at the Eden Project and following a successful interview, was offered the placement.

Rob will be trained by some of the UK's most experienced agricultural specialists responsible for maintaining the outdoor gardens and Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes that have made Eden famous.

Reed in Partnership Chief Executive, Chris Melvin, explained: "The Backing Young Britain campaign is the ideal opportunity for young people to gain the skills and experience that are vital, not only to their future career development, but also to British companies wishing to gain from the talented youth we possess in this country. It's a pleasure to be able to assist the government and play a crucial part in this scheme."

Rob will still be eligible to collect his fortnightly Jobseeker's Allowance, additional training allowance and travel costs whilst completing the internship, ensuring he has the resources to get the best out of his experience.

A wide range of further internships and work experience placements are available through Reed in Partnership's backingyoungbritain.co.uk website.

Reed in Partnership launches in Poland

The launch of Reed in Partnership’s Poland contract signals hope to the thousands of unemployed people within the country

In recent years, Poland has experienced a heightened level of unemployment, with record levels of people out of work or reliant on government benefits. A successful bid from Reed in Partnership to the Polish government was followed by months of research and careful preparation ahead of the contract, which launched in March.

The move into the European market presents fresh and varied challenges for Reed in Partnership's international team. Concentrating initially on three areas of the country, Katowice, Czestochowa, and Chorzow, the contract places a high emphasis on the alleviation of social exclusion as well as social and vocational reintegration.

In Katawice, focus is centred on women who have been excluded from employment due to a range of social or personal barriers, including age, disability, lack of qualifications or being lone parents. The programme aims to provide a means for such women to increase their employability, by raising motivation and increasing professional aspirations. The programme works with 120 long-term unemployed individuals, including 50 single parents, over 50 women aged 70 plus, and 15 women with disabilities.

In Czestochowa, the programme is working with 135 homeless individuals to help motivate and prepare them for the job market. Working with this target group means the focus here is on developing individuals’ social skills as well as regulating their legal situation. The project will also have an important role to play in breaking down existing prejudice towards homelessness and the negativity of employers towards this group.

Finally, in Chorzow, the project is focused on awakening the aspirations and increasing skills of 120 individuals who are threatened by social exclusion due to long-term unemployment, lack of vocational qualifications or health conditions.

Workshops and training are offered in all three districts, providing jobseekers with qualifications and skills and thus increasing their chances of obtaining and securing sustainable employment.

Chris Melvin, Chief Executive of Reed in Partnership, says: “We are delighted to have expanded our international capabilities into the Polish market. I am confident that with our understanding of the needs of employers and our personalised approach to supporting customers, we will help a significant number of people move into sustainable employment.”

Working for them

Reed in Partnership proudly announces its involvement in the Young Person's Guarantee

The Young Person's Guarantee is designed to address youth unemployment in the UK, and Reed in Partnership is now providing work focused training to 18-24 year olds as part of the scheme. The initiative commits to providing these young people with employment opportunities, training and work experience.

The courses are run by Reed in Partnership from two offices in London and are specifically designed for those who have been on Jobseekers Allowance for six months or more. The training is committed to equipping young people with the skills they need to achieve their job goals and kick-start their careers.

Young people joining the programme are given a dedicated Personal Adviser to help them create a tailored back-to-work plan based on their barriers, job goals and interests. In order to achieve the most effective solution, the Adviser matches them to the most suitable programme of training.

The training is supported by key delivery partners, including Springboard, the Xchange Group and Reed Learning, who together provide a wide range of employability-related training courses.

Options on the programme include:

Transferable Skills
Training to improve basic reading, writing, maths or computer skills, which will work towards a recognised ‘Skills for Life’ qualification.

Job Specific Training
Training based on a specific sector, such as retail, which provides sector knowledge. This training will lead to an NVQ Level 2 qualification in the young person's chosen sector.

Employability Skills
Essential training for those who struggle with CVs, interviews, business culture and the general processes surrounding finding and keeping a job.

Work Trials
A minimum of four weeks’ workplace experience for those wishing to put training into practice, and improve their CVs.

Graduate Support
A high level overview of the recruitment process for graduates who have struggled to find work since leaving university.

Executive Skills
Key skills training for managerial and higher level candidates, which includes negotiation and communication skills.

As a demographic group, young people have been particularly affected by the economic downturn, making this initiative so important. “The aim of this programme is really to support young people into their chosen career, rather than just into a job. That's why we provide a variety of training programmes and are committed to the future success of our customers,” said Dermot Moloney, Operations Manager for the programme. "We have helped almost 100 young people acquire the training they need to give the solid foundations to start their careers and look forward to seeing the positive outcomes that this training provides

Reed in Partnership is inviting partners to PEP event in May

The Personalised Employment Programme (PEP) is part of the Government's welfare reform agenda. This is a pilot programme that will test combining employment provision into a single programme, supporting customers based on what they need rather than the benefit they claim.

The four year contract is targeted at supporting Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) and Employment Support Allowance (ESA) claimants through mandatory participation. It will also target other customers who may join the programme on a voluntary basis, including single parents and Incapacity Benefit claimants.

Reed in Partnership has been successful at the initial stage for the PEP opportunity in North London. This covers Barnet, Enfield and Haringey where the successful provider will engage 38,000 JSA, ESA and voluntary customers over the life of the pilot.

We are now holding a local provider event to build a network of public, private and voluntary organisations who would help develop and deliver our PEP delivery model. Who should attend? We'd like to hear from any organisation that feels it can add value and innovation to traditional job preparation and brokerage services. In particular:

 Current providers in Barnet, Enfield and/or Haringey
 Organisations experienced in delivering employment, skills and support services to mandatory JSA and ESA customers and voluntary customers
 Organisations experienced in delivering services both pre and post employment, from short interventions to longer term support, for example up to two years

This event is an excellent opportunity for potential partners, subcontractors and stakeholders to begin to build relationships and partnerships for the benefit of PEP customers.

Event details

Where: Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Haringey
When: 4 May, 9.30am - Midday

If you would like to attend please send an email to the below address with your contact details and any specific requirements you may have. We look forward to seeing you there.
