Employment Zone (Job Seekers Allowance)

Employment Zones were introduced in 2000 to reduce unemployment levels in 15 of the most deprived areas in the UK. They are a three stage programme to help the long term unemployed back to work, and it is mandatory for individuals to take part in this programme if:
  • they are aged 25 and over and have been receiving Jobseeker's Allowance for 18 of the last 21 months
  • they are aged 18-24 and have been receiving Jobseeker's Allowance for six months and have previously taken part in New Deal for Young People
  • they have taken part in an Employment Zones programme in the last 12 months but did not complete the programme
Our Employment Advisers that work on these programmes will aid members in deciding what kind of work they are looking for, gaining an understanding of what may be preventing them from getting that work, before drawing up an action plan together with the member to aid them in their efforts to find work.
